There was a special bottle on a shelf in an old workshop. It contained a wooden ship with bright white sails and a hoisted flag.

But the little ship was not happy at all. “How did I end up here in this narrow bottle?” the ship kept asking itself as it pressed against the glass wall day in, day out.

One day, old Captain Henry came into his workshop to dust off his bottle. “Oh, my faithful ship!” he said gently, tapping the glass lovingly. “You’ve had so many adventures with me, but unfortunately those days are long gone.”

The old captain paused and sighed. As if he had been waiting for an answer from inside the bottle. “After all, you’ll be with me in this bottle for all eternity. Nothing can happen to you here.”

He patted the bottle once more and then walked slowly to the cellar stairs, leaning on his wooden stick. “No – please don’t go!” the ship wanted to say. “It’s so terribly boring here.” But Henry had already disappeared.

The next morning, when the first rays of sunshine lit up the workshop, the little ship suddenly became alert. A little boy called Archie entered the room.

His eyes lit up when he spotted the bottle with the ship. “Wow!” he exclaimed enthusiastically. “A real pirate ship! Is that yours, Grandpa?”

Archie couldn’t take his eyes off the bottle. He imagined the ship conquering wild waves and finding hidden treasures.

But then he frowned. “Why is the ship trapped in a bottle?” he asked. Now Henry also came into the workshop. He smiled wistfully. “Well, you might ask questions. So that it doesn’t get lost, of course!”

That night, when everything was quiet, Archie came into the workshop again. He came very close to the bottle and thought he heard sobbing inside.

“I know why you’re sad,” he whispered. “I’m sure you’d much rather be sailing around the sea, wouldn’t you?” The ship nodded. It didn’t know if Archie could understand, but it felt good to be able to talk to someone at all.

The following day, Archie had an idea and went back to the workshop with his grandpa. “Can you please tell me a story about you and this ship? I would like to know what you have experienced together and which seas you have explored.” Henry picked up the bottle, sat down in his chair and began to tell the story.

“Wow, that sounds so exciting, Grandpa. I wish I could experience something like that.” Archie was ecstatic and old Henry was now also reminiscing. “Yes, I’d love to be out there again too. Just me and my ship.”

“Grandpa, do you think the ship is happy in there?” Archie pointed to the bottle! Henry looked at his grandson in amazement: “What do you mean, my boy?”

“Well, you’d rather get back out on the open sea. I don’t think the ship looks happy in this bottle.” The old captain frowned and thought.

“You’re a clever boy!” said Henry suddenly. “This wonderful ship doesn’t deserve to be trapped in this bottle. I’d never thought of it that way before. But now, looking at it more closely, I see it too. It looks very sad.” Inside the bottle, the ship was overjoyed; someone was finally coming to its rescue. But it still had to be patient.

“Before I change my mind … get dressed, we’re going to the harbor!” Without knowing what Henry was up to, Archie hurried to the checkroom, put on his wellies and coat and waited for his grandpa at the stairs.

When the two arrived at the harbor, Henry suddenly handed the precious bottle to his grandson. “Here, you set my ship free. After all, you saved it from my stubbornness.”

Archie was excited. With a careful tug, he removed the cork and held the bottle in the water. The ship slid carefully out of its glass prison and landed gently on the waves.

But suddenly something strange, even magical, happened. The ship seemed much bigger than it had just been in the bottle. Its sails billowed in the wind and the flag fluttered proudly.

It made an elegant turn in the sea and sent a friendly smile to Archie. “Set sail and take care!” Henry called out encouragingly and somewhat wistfully at the same time. The ship picked up speed as if it had never been trapped in a bottle and disappeared into the horizon.

“That was probably the right decision,” he said, placing a hand on Archie’s shoulder. “A ship belongs on the water. I should have known that better than anyone.”

With a last look, the old captain said goodbye to his ship and Archie realized that his grandpa was happier now too.
