A sultry heat lay over the savannah. The sun was high in the sky and Richard the meerkat, Susan the zebra and Jasper the lion were sweating profusely as they made their way through the dry bushes.
Richard balanced skillfully on a fallen tree trunk, while Susan drew pretty patterns in the sand with the tip of her tail. Jasper trotted comfortably behind, lost in his thoughts once again.
“Look over there!” Richard suddenly shouted excitedly and pointed towards the horizon with his little paw. Dark clouds had gathered there and a low rumble could be heard
“It’s going to be quite a storm!” said Susan excitedly, pawing at her hooves. Jasper raised his head lazily and blinked. “Then we’d better hurry to get home in time.”
The friends immediately set off on the way back. Susan trotted ahead, Richard dashed alongside her and Jasper kept a more leisurely pace. He knew that he was fast enough to catch up with both of them if necessary
The clouds in the sky were getting darker and darker, and the wind was already carrying the earthy scent of rain. But suddenly Richard stumbled over something small that was moving quickly.
“A gecko!” he called out and crouched down curiously. The tiny animal looked frightened and didn’t seem to know where it belonged. Richard carefully lifted his paw. “Hello, little one. What are you doing here all alone?”
Susan stopped and also returned to Richard. “We have to go! The clouds are getting closer!” shouted Jasper, grumbling energetically. “The rain will be here soon, Richard. Leave the gecko alone and come on,” said Susan as she looked anxiously at the sky. But Richard couldn’t leave the little animal behind.
“He’s lost his way. We can’t just leave him here. The rain will just wash him away,” said Richard resolutely. He carefully picked up the gecko and placed it on his shoulder. “I’ll get him to safety, even if I get wet myself.”
Susan and Jasper looked at each other. ‘We can’t leave Richard alone,’ Susan said. Jasper sighed and nodded in agreement. Together they walked more slowly so that Richard could carry the gecko safely
“Up ahead!” Richard shouted with relief. A large rock with a dry crevasse was in sight. “That’s perfect for our little friend.” He carefully placed the gecko in the sheltered crevice. The gecko blinked gratefully at Richard and scurried inside the rock in no time.
As the three friends made their way home soaking wet, the rain slowly began to let up. The clouds opened up and suddenly a beautiful double rainbow bathed the sky in the most shimmering colors
“Have you ever seen anything more beautiful?” Susan asked in amazement. Jasper grinned and said: “No! That must have been the reward for your good deed, Richard,” and proudly patted his narrow shoulders with his paw.
Richard looked happy. Suddenly the storm had completely lost its darkness. The three friends laughed exuberantly, jumped through the puddles and watched the hippos happily wallowing in the mud in the waterhole. “Not bad at all, such a day in the rain,” the three of them remarked contentedly.
