It was a sunny morning, and Charlie the Dog lay curled up in his basket, dreaming of a wonderful day with his favorite sock. He had swiped that sock from the laundry basket a few days earlier with great skill, and it was the softest, fluffiest piece of fabric he had ever owned.

But when he reached into his basket that day, the sock was suddenly gone! Charlie’s ears drooped, and his nose immediately began to work, sniffing this way and that.

Charlie started his search right there in his basket, since that was where he’d seen the sock last. But it wasn’t there. “No sock in sight!” he huffed, disappointed.

Next, he crawled under the couch. Instead of the sock, though, he only pulled out a dusty hair clip. So he kept sniffing, this time with his nose pressed close to the floor, just like a real detective.

His trail led him into the kitchen, where he found a scattering of crumbs forming a little path. “Very suspicious,” Charlie thought, and followed the trail to a table.

There sat Mia, the little girl, holding a giant chocolate cookie. “Charlie, why are you sniffing so funny?” Mia asked. But Charlie wouldn’t be distracted. With one elegant swoop around her chair, he sniffed his way into the hallway.

Here the trail suddenly turned chaotic. A toy duck lay tipped over on the rug, and a blanket had slid half off the couch. Charlie sniffed at everything, very thoroughly.

Then he heard a rustling behind the curtain. He crouched low and crept closer, ever so carefully. With a quick pounce, he swept the curtain aside — but it was only a newspaper, fluttering past on a breeze from the open window.

Charlie shook himself off and pressed on. At the door, he found another clue: a small thread that clearly belonged to his sock! Excited, he followed the trail out onto the balcony. At the balcony door, he stopped short. A soft sound drifted in from outside. It sounded like… purring?

Nudging the door open with his nose, Charlie looked around. There, behind a flowerpot, something grey lay curled up. He crept closer, very carefully.

His nose led him straight to Willow, the grey cat from next door, who was stretched out in a warm, sunny spot. And there, tucked between her paws — Charlie’s sock!

“Meow,” said Willow innocently. Charlie growled, indignant. “That’s my sock! Give it back!” But Willow only yawned and stretched. “I found it in your garden. It’s perfect for cuddling. So soft!”

Charlie sat down in front of Willow, his eyes fixed on the sock. He thought hard. Then an idea struck him. Without a word, he trotted into the kitchen, hopped up at the fridge door, and pried it open with his paw. With his snout, he snatched a piece of cheese, left the door hanging open, and returned in triumph.

“How about a trade?” Charlie asked, setting the cheese down right in front of Willow. Willow’s ears perked up. “Cheese? Now this is interesting,” she purred. With one graceful swipe of her paw, she nudged the sock over to Charlie and snatched up the cheese. Then she slipped away, purring and elegant as ever, over the balcony railing.

Charlie carried his sock back to his basket in triumph. He curled up happily, the sock tucked snugly under his chin. But then, suddenly, he heard a voice from the kitchen: “Who left the fridge open again?”

Charlie lay very still in his basket, the sock held safely in his paws, and thought to himself: that would just have to stay his own little secret.
