Why baby stories are different

At this age, it’s not about the plot. It’s about your voice. Babies fall in love with rhythm, repetition, and the calm, familiar sound of a parent reading. That’s why the stories above are short (most take just two to five minutes), gentle in tone, and full of soft, repeating sounds that help little eyes grow heavy.

Every story here is our own, made with the same love we put into the stories we read to our own children. You will find more of them in our collection of children’s stories.

Which story for which age?

For newborns (0 to 12 months): At this age, your baby understands the melody of your voice long before the words. Choose the very shortest stories and don’t worry about finishing. Reading a few calm sentences in a low, slow voice is all it takes. Repetition is your friend: the same story every evening becomes a sleep signal.

For toddlers (1 to 2 years): Now simple plots begin to work their magic, an animal looking for its bed, the moon saying goodnight. Stories with repeating phrases invite your child to “read along” with sounds and gestures. Two to four minutes is the sweet spot.

For little listeners (2 to 3 years): Your child follows short adventures now and loves recognizing familiar characters. This is the perfect age to graduate slowly toward our short bedtime stories for kids and the wider world of our children’s stories. On tired evenings, the shortest, calmest tales above are still the best choice.

What makes a great baby story?

Over the years of writing (and reading!) bedtime stories, we’ve learned what makes the youngest listeners settle down:

  • Rhythm beats plot. Babies respond to the music of language: short sentences, soft repetitions, gentle sounds. Read slowly, almost like a lullaby you speak.
  • Familiar is better than new. Don’t be afraid to read the same story every night for weeks. That predictability is exactly what tells your baby: now it’s time to sleep.
  • Quiet endings. The best baby stories end the same way: calm, resolved, with someone falling asleep. No cliffhangers, ever.
  • Short is perfect. Two to five minutes is plenty. It’s completely fine to stop mid-story when the little eyes close.

Questions parents ask

When should I start reading bedtime stories to my baby?

Earlier than you might think! You can start from birth. Newborns won’t follow the words, but they recognize your voice and calm down to its rhythm. Many families make a story part of the bedtime routine from the very first weeks.

How long should a bedtime story for a baby be?

Two to four minutes is ideal for babies and young toddlers. It’s less about finishing the story and more about the ritual: dim light, cozy blanket, calm voice.

Should I read the same story every night?

Yes. Repetition is soothing, not boring, for babies. A familiar story works like a sleep signal. Swap in a new one whenever you both feel like it.

Are these stories really free?

Yes. All our baby stories are our own and free to read, with no sign-up and no downloads required.
